Digital mammography offers faster, clearer and more portable images that help detect and diagnose breast cancer

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – April 2, 2012 – Mammography has gone digital at Jordan Valley West, providing faster, clearer and more portable images that help detect and diagnose breast cancer.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women, and one of every eight adult women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. Studies have shown, however, that early detection raises the likelihood of successful treatment to nearly 100 percent.

“The clarity, speed and flexibility of digital mammography will make this potentially life-saving screening process simple and convenient,” said Angela Evatz-Jacobs, director of women’s health services at Jordan Valley West. “We are excited to provide this enhanced technology to the women in our community.”

Like conventional film-based mammograms, digital mammography uses compression and X ray to create a clear image of the inside of the breast. Digital mammography, however, provides an instant electronic image file that can be viewed on a high-resolution monitor. This allows the physician to enlarge and zoom in on areas of interest, adjusting brightness and contrast as necessary for proper diagnosis. Digital mammography also reduces the time and X-ray exposure associated with retakes..
